Location of Cape Cod
|
|
Cape Cod is an arm-shaped peninsula forming the Easternmost portion of the commonwealth of Massachusetts,
in the Northeastern United States. It is coextensive with Barnstable County. Although Cape Cod was originally
connected to the mainland, the Cape Cod Canal, completed in 1914, effectively transformed Cape Cod into
a large island. |
Climate of Cape Cod
|
|
Cape Cod's maritime climate is changeable from day to night and from day to day. Because it is a peninsula,
it is more temperate than surrounding areas (cooler in summer, warmer in winter.) |
Best Time to Travel to Cape Cod
|
|
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for Cape Cod tourism. Cape Cod experiences a tourist explosion
each summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day, as the New England cold gives way to a brief but comfortable
summer. Come in the off-season when the beaches afford solitude and the towns have quietened down. Cape Cod
is also the gateway to the beautiful vacation islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. |
Attractions in Cape Cod
|
Like Cape Cod itself, the islands south of Cape Cod have turned from being whaling and trading
areas to resort destinations for the Northeast, attracting old, wealthy families, celebrities,
and prosperous tourists alike. The islands include Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, as well
as the Elizabeth Island chain. Several prominent families have established compounds
or estates on the larger islands, making these Cape Cod offshore islands some of the wealthiest
resorts in the Northeast, yet they retain much of the early merchant trading and whaling culture.
Millions of visitors from around the world flock to the amazing natural beauty of the Cape and
although known as the playground for the rich and famous and mostly geared for big spenders there
is plenty of sun, sea and sand for everyone to enjoy. Provincetown, at the tip of the Cape,
is long renowned as an artistic colony with more than 20 galleries. It is also the liveliest
resort town on the Cape. Stretching from Provincetown down to the pretty town of Chatham,
from the ‘fist’ to the ‘elbow’ of the peninsula along the Atlantic Ocean, are 64 km (40 mi) of
dunes and desolate beaches protected within the Cape Cod National Seashore. Wellfleet is a
quieter and picturesque town untouched by commercial development, and famous for its oysters.
The commercial towns along the horizontal stretch of the arm represented by the ‘biceps’
offer the obvious attractions of shopping, exquisite dining and beach activities,
but there is also whale-watching, walking and biking. |

Leisure Activities on Cape Cod
|
No trip to Cape Cod is complete without a whale watching tour off our coast. Take a sea cruise!
Cape Cod offers the calm of Cape Cod Bay of the expanse of the Atlantic ocean. Explore these
links for boat, kayak and canoe rentals. The beaches of the North and West of Cape Cod face
Cape Cod Bay and have the least surf. The tides go out for miles and small children are safest
here. The southside beaches facing Nantucket Sound have small wave action and are still
very safe for toddlers. The east-facing beaches are on the Atlantic Ocean and have larger surf
and undertows. Children should be supervised, but teens and adults love it. Cape Cod offers the
largest concentration of fine restaurants in New England. With well over 1,000 eateries from
the Canal to Princetown you could eat at a different place for breakfast, lunch & dinner for
an entire year.
Tipping: Restaurants do not include a service charge in the bill, so you should tip the waiter
15% of the total bill. If service was slow or particularly bad, some Americans will tip only 10%.
Likewise, if service was particularly good, it is appropriate to tip 20%. Tipping is only
appropriate in restaurants which offer table service. You do not tip the cashier in a fast food restaurant. |
