Location of Tenerife
|
|
Tenerife, the largest of the seven islands that make up the Canary Island archipelago, lies between
the 28th and the 29th parallel north and 16 and 17 degrees west. Slightly to the north of the Tropic
of Cancer, situated in the centre of the chain, between Gran Canaria, La Gomera and La Palma. The
island is just over 300 km from the African coast, and about 1,300 km from the Spanish Mainland.

Climate in Tenerife
|
|
The Passat winds which go through the high mountain and the cool sea current are to thank for the
good and balanced climate conditions the whole year round. The average lies between 20-22ºC (68-72ºF).
During the cooler days the thermometer doesn't fall under 15ºC (59ºF) and rarely gets higher than 30ºC (86ºF)
on the hotter days. Tenerife has different climatic zones: 1. The land below the clouds - there is
almost the whole year a warm subtropical climate with a lot of sun and sporadic rain. 2. The land
in the clouds - (between 500-1,200 meters) there is high humidity, higher rain precipitation
and cooler temperatures also in summer. 3 The land over the clouds - has the greatest temperature
changes between night and day and summer and winter. During the day it's warm and dry, by night it
can be very cool.

Food in Tenerife
|
|
Tenerife offers a huge variety of international restaurants and cuisine, just about every taste is catered for.
The cuisine of the Canaries offers many dishes based on fish, which are usually served with potatoes and a
special sauce called "mojo picon". The traditional dishes are watercress soup and the popular "sancocho canario",
a fish salad with a hot sauce. Locally grown bananas, tomatoes, avocados and papayas also play an important
part in the Canaries’ cuisine. Corn meal, wheat flour, pre-roasted corn or barley are eaten instead of bread
with certain local dishes. Local pastries include the excellent tirijalas, bienmesabes, frangollo, bizcochos
lustrados, quesadillas, rapaduras marquesotes, meat pies and ‘nougats’ of corn meal and molasses. A full range
of wines, spirits and liqueurs from throughout the world is available. Spanish wines and spirits are particularly
good value and spirits are slightly cheaper than in the UK. Local beers are pilsner-type lagers and, on the whole,
rather weak.

Attractions in Tenerife
|
|
Tenerife is a volcanic island that was originally formed in the late Tertiary Age. Seven million years ago, the areas of
Teno, Anaga and Adeje emerged from the sea and later joined together to form the Dorsal Mountain Range. Black sandy beaches,
surfing, beautiful pine- and laurel forests in the northern part of the island, complete solitude in the thin air of great heights,
watching dolphins in the Atlantic, through-celebrated nights, traditional fiestas, modern shopping centres, discovering rare plants,
scuba diving, climbing through tight ravines. In the centre of the island, the impressive cone of Teide (3,718 m) rises up over
the Caldera de Las Cañadas, forming the highest point of the island and, indeed, of the whole of Spain. The rugged island terrain and
the variety of climates has produced a territory of many different landscapes and forms, from the Teide National Park to Los Gigantes Cliffs
with their vertical walls, with semi-desert areas with their drought-resistant plants in the south, valleys of tropical and
sub-tropical crops, areas of laurel forests in the Anaga and Teno massifs and large areas of pine forest above the
laurel forests relicts of the Tertiary Age. The wide variety of climates and landscapes in Tenerife is matched by a wealth
of ecosystems, each with its own characteristic flora and fauna.
