Events on Lanzarote

Carnival is a time of riotous fun and revelry and provides a wonderful excuse to escape from monotonous daily routine, ditch our everyday attire and have some incredible fun. It starts off with the competition of the best Murgas a flamboyant and colourful parade of people wearing fantastic costumes, whistles and drums; much of the following spectacles revolve around the Carnival Queen who is elected in a sensational grand gala and celebrations end with El entierro de la sardinas on Ash Wednesday. So, expect several days of street parties, wear your dancing shoes and come and join the fun!!

Food on Lanzarote

Lanzarotenos enjoy all kinds of meat, but pork takes first place. Not to be missed is the specially prepared roast leg of pork. Potatoes are another common ingredient and come in a variety of ways. Outstanding are the potato stews or the ubiquitous and aptly named papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes), which are boiled in extremely salty water and eaten with mojo sauce. And to round out your taste experience, there are shellfish and a variety of tropical fruits.

Society on Lanzarote

There is a mysterious haze surrounding the natives of the Canary Islands whose culture is now extinct. Who were these islanders and where did they come from? Fact is that their presence on these islands was a strange anomaly given their position near the African continent: they were tall, had a light skin colour and often blonde hair. They were called Guanches and came from North Africa, originating from the same stock as the Berbers of the Atlas Mountains. Certainly the Guanches had to arrive via the Ocean but when the Europeans set foot on Canary grounds they found a Neolithic culture based on shepherding and limited agriculture that completely lacked the basic principles of navigation - the islands were in fact cut off from one another-. Some claim that the Canary Islands are the uppermost peaks of the lost continent of Atlantis and that the Guanches were the descendants from the last survivors of the sunken civilization.
Tipping: It is customary to tip taxi drivers 10% of the fare. Most restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill, you can leave a couple more Euro change if you like.
