Climate of Fuerteventura
|
|
The climate on Fuerteventura, on the island of eternal springs, is pleasant throughout the year. The sea
adjusts the temperature making the hot Sahara winds blow away from the island of Fuerteventura. During
the winter months, temperatures average a high of 21°C (70°F) and a low of around 15°C (59°F), whereas during
the summer a mean high of 27°C (80°F) and a low of 20°C (68°F) can be expected. Precipitation is about
147 mm per annum, most of which falls in the winter. The sandstorm known as the scirocco, Leveche in
Spain blows to the southwest from the Sahara desert causing high temperatures and low visibility and
drying air. Temperatures during this phenomena rise by 10°C. The wind brings in fine white sand,
visibility drops to about 100-200 m or lower, and also African (locusts). The local inhabitants
call this phenomena the "Calima".

Attractions on Fuerteventura
|
|
Fuerteventura is the most arid and deserted land in the Canary Islands - the Sahara is a little
more than 200 km. from the Island. Evocative of the stark beauty of the vast Sahara, the island of
Fuerteventura mesmerizes with miles of golden sand dunes and meandering white-sand beaches that invite
endless exploration and promise the ultimate escape. The summer trade winds and winter swells of the
Atlantic make this a year-round surfers' paradise. Sailors, scuba divers and big game fishermen are
all drawn to these clear blue Atlantic waters where whales, dolphins, marlin and turtles are all common
sights. The rich coastal areas of Fuerteventura are a mecca for watersports lovers from around the globe.
Windsurf at Playa de Sotavento, where winds blow from the Atlantic side and gain acceleration
from the hills that lie behind. Dive in Fuerteventura's turquoise waters, where you will sea magnificent
submarine lava beds and teeming marine life. Bring the family along for a fun-filled day in any of
town beaches in Corralejo. There are wide areas of dunes and white beaches of Jable sand,
forming a nice contrast with the turquoise blue of the sky and the clear water of the sea. Very near
to the east of Corralejo, is the Lobos Island, a small island with a population of one - the
lighthouse keeper! If you like diving don't miss this place, it's one of the best spots in the
Canaries to let loose.

Events on Fuerteventura
|
|
During the months of February and March it's carnival time in Fuerteventura, and there's no
better time to visit. Almost every major town hosts its own carnival, each attempting to out-do the
rest with noise, colour and pure abandon. During the carnival a host of sporting events, cultural
happenings, musical performances and culinary displays can all be enjoyed. The
climax comes with a spectacular procession of colourful floats, fantastically adorned with crazy
decorations, and costumed dancers all moving to the beat. The whole thing usually culminates with
a weekend-long party with a funfair, plenty of music and dancing until dawn.

Food on Fuerteventura
|
|
The typical dishes of Fuerteventura consist mainly of the simplest ingredients, and in their
original form they are now only served in simple restaurants, mostly far away from the tourist zones.
One of them is gofio, for example, the staple diet of the island people. Gofio is a flour
of roasted and ground grains, used among other things to thicken soups and stews. In the morning
people stir it into their milky coffee, and it is added to the porridge eaten by small children.
Gofio even forms part of the diet of Canary Isle dogs. Another speciality of Canarian cuisine is
papas arrugadas con mojo, little wrinkly potatoes with mojo verde (green garlic sauce)
or mojo rojo, also called mojo picón (red garlic sauce, very spicy). The wrinkly potatoes,
which are eaten with their jackets, are made by boiling small potatoes in very salty water (originally,
this was always sea-water), then pouring off the water and drying out the potatoes on a low flame,
shaking the pot all the time until the rest of the water has evaporated and the crystallised salt
clings to the skins of the potatoes. Papas arrugadas con mojo are eaten with both fish and meat dishes.
Just as popular are the batatas (depending on the season) con mojo, sweet potatoes with
garlic sauce. The taste of the very sweet potatoes and the very hot garlic make an interesting and
harmonious combination.

Society on Fuerteventura
|
|
Culture in Fuerteventura and in the Canary Islands in general is essentially Spanish culture with
a little influence from Latin America. There are however several aspects to local culture that are
unique to the Islands. As in southern Spain, there is a Siesta between one and four in the afternoon
when locals will take their main meal of the day. Spanish people then eat a smaller meal in the late
evening – often after nine o'clock at night. Spanish people like to go out late and a typical Saturday
night out might not kick off until about Midnight.
