Information about the Guest House in Basque Country, Spain
Holiday in Zumaia, Guipuzcoa: Zumaia is nestled in an amphitheatre of green mountains crowned by the rocky Izarraitz massif. Its bay is where the Urola and Narrondo Rivers meet, flowing together into the sea between spectacular cliffs. Its 11.27 sq km territory borders the Cantabrian Sea on the north, Getaria on the east, Deba on the west and Zestoa and Aizamazabal on the south. Most of its 8,700 inhabitants are concentrated in the town centre. Its three neighbourhoods are located on Artadi Mountain, in the Oikia Valley and in the curve of the Narrondo River, bordering Zestoa. After six centuries, the structure of the old medieval town is still recognisable, despite the changes.
Nature in the Basque Country: From Itzurun beach in Zumaia to Deba, formations of vertical strata rise above the sea, creating a magical, majestic and singular landscape. When the tide recedes from the base of the cliff, a large abrasion platform is revealed, bearing testimony to the never-ceasing erosion caused by the sea, full of a thousand life forms. One can also see that this erosion from the sea has exposed a layer of iridium in the Algorri area. The presence of this element is attributed to a huge meteorite striking the earth 65 million years ago, which is believed to be what caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.
- Itzurun beach: open to the Cantabrian Sea, overlooked by the shrine of San Telmo, patron saint of sailors, and surrounded by spectacular vertical strata, this beach boasts the Blue Flag eco-label. From its dark sands, it affords a complete view of the Vizcaya coast all the way to Matxitxako. Its sands and water are recognised for their beneficial health properties, because of their high concentration of iodine.
Museums: To see the works of art in Zumaia, it is necessary to visit the town's two museums. The Zuloaga Museum is in Arenal de Santiago. This house/workshop of the famous painter, a native of Eibar, was at one time an inn on the Camino de Santiago, and also has a chapel. A large part of his collection of artwork is on display here. Works by El Greco and Zurbarán, and others in the style of Goya, etc., can also be seen.
The museum dedicated to the sculptor Julio Beobide is located at the end of the avenue that bears his name. Kresala, his house/workshop, offers us an overview of his notable work.
Also worthy of note is the Interpretation Centre for the Wave-Cut Abrasion Platform and the Flysch, whose aim is to educate visitors regarding the extraordinary natural value of Zumaia, in particular with respect to the geological features of the cliff and the abrasion platform, and the phenomenon known as a flysch.
