Notes: Casa Morisca is decorated and furnished in local style and earthy colours, sympathetic to its origins, 400 years ago. There are arab style banquettes by the log-burning stove in the traditional fire place in the lounge and matching lighting. The old fountain that supplied water to the previous owners through the centuries has been restored and there is the sound of running water throughout the house from this and the fountain in the patio – though now recycled by pump. ‘Mi casa es tu casa.’
Information about the Holiday House in Albunuelas, Granada
Experience real Spain: Albuñuelas is a tranquil traditional working farming village. Things have not changed a lot for a century; mules still work in the fields; bread, still hot from the oven, and fresh fish are delivered to the door daily.
With irrigation systems installed by the Moors over half a millennium ago there is a wealth of oranges, lemons, pomegranates, avocados, mangoes and vegetables – almonds, olives, and pines covering the higher slopes. Different crops are being harvested and it is ideal to visit at all times of the year.
Albuñuelas, Granada, an ideal touring centre: There is walking and mountain biking available from the door. There are three bridges over the river Santo, an extensive network of mule tracks up the hillside and a number of unmetalled camino forestal tracks, which give tremendous scope for walking and mountain bikes.
Albuñuelas lies at the head of the Lecrín valley, and it is an ideal touring centre. 24 miles to the city of Granada; 26 miles to the coast: Almuñécar, Salobreña, Costa Tropical; 1 hour to skiing at 2100 - 3300 m; 35 minutes to Granada airport and 90 minutes to Málaga. There is a direct bus to Granada.
Granada was capital of the Arab Kingdom in Europe for 800 years until the reconquest by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. It is a World Heritage Centre with the Alhambra, Generalife palace and gardens, the Albaicín, old hill top Moorish town, university, monasteries, cathedral and Plaza de Toros – not to mention galleries, restaurants, bars, concerts, flamenco and shopping.
Lecrín Valley: You can have a wonderful get-away holiday without leaving the valley. Midway from the City of Granada to the coast, its lake Béznar is fed by the melting snows of the Sierra Nevada. Unlike the adjacent Alpujarra, it remains hidden from the influences of tourism. There are a dozen neighbouring villages, Moorish castles, Mozárabe churches, museums, oil and water mills to be explored. Caballo at 3013m stands to the east and is capped in snow until well into spring, after the blossom has fallen from the almond trees.
The long distance footpath E4 GR7 from Algeciras to Istanbul passes through the valley and six of its villages before heading over the Sierra to the spa town of Lanjarón.
The town of Dúrcal is 7 miles away, on the motorway linking Granada to the coast. It has hotels, restaurants, banks, cash machines, shops, daily market and a big Wednesday morning market, bars, nightclubs, churches, bike hire shop, thermal springs and access to the Sierra Nevada Parque Natural.
