Our chalet in Zirovnica is close by the stunning Lake Bled

Slovenia is located at the Eastern end of the Alps bordering Austria, Italy and Croatia. The Chalet is situated 6km from the Austrian border and 35km from the Italian border. It is one hours drive from the country’s historic capital, Ljubljana and 10 minutes drive from Lake Bled, Slovenia’s number one tourist destination. Fly into Ljubljana (Brnik airport) - 40mins from chalet, Trieste - 2hrs drive. You may also choose to fly into Venice (3 hours drive) for a couple of days sightseeing before heading off into the mountains. The chalet is located in a small tributary valley in the Karavanke Alps. There are endless opportunities for walking, hiking or mountaineering around the Chalet and within the Triglav National Park which is located in this region of Slovenia. Lake Bled is a picture postcard setting – a beautiful lake with islet and mountains as a backdrop. There are also a good selection of bars and restaurants in the town.

Walking/hiking: This region of Slovenia is perfect for walking, hiking and mountaineering. You can start your route from the Chalet and hike up Stol (2236m), the highest mountain in the Karavanke Alps where you can take in the breathtaking views from the summit looking over the Triglav National Park and across into Austria. Alternatively travel into the National park where there are endless opportunities to explore marked paths/walkways and take in the wonderful scenery of the Julian and Karavanke Alps. The tourist information centre in Bled will be happy to advise on options available to suit your requirements.

Skiing in Slovenia: The skiing season starts in December and normally finishes end March although it can extend into April. There are 4 ski resorts all within 40 minutes drive. Kranjska Gora near the Italian border is the largest and best equipped resort in Slovenia. This resort is host to the Men's World Cup Slalom each year. We would also recommend Krvavec which again is very well equipped, caters for children with playschool/creche facility and has guaranteed snow between December & mid April. Vogel & Kobla are smaller resorts located within the Triglav National park close to Lake Bohinj. There is also a nursery ski slope within Bled itself - the Straza ski centre is located behind Grand Hotel Toplice. It's vertical drop is only 150 metres but it is ideal for young children & beginners. It is also floodlit allowing night skiing. During the summer months this slope reverts into a toboggan run which is great fun for all ages. Ski passes covering all resorts, and equipment can be hired from Bled.

Other information: Fishing: Go lake fishing around Bled or Bohinj, or river fishing on the Radovna, Sava Bohinijka or Soca rivers. Licenses can be obtained from the Tourist information centre in Bled. Golf: The Bled Golf & country club is less than 10 minutes drive from the Chalet. There are two courses - the Kings course is Slovenia's best & reputedly one of the most beautiful courses in Europe with it's dramatic mountains as backdrops. We recommend you check availability before planning your round because of a number of scheduled tournaments. There are many other activities available to you. Hire a mountain bike and cover the 7km from the Chalet to Bled in less than an hour. Try white water rafting on the Sava Bohinijka river (near Bled) - recommend you try this in spring after winter snow melt. You can go horse riding at the Mcina Ranc near Lake Bohinj or simply relax around Lake Bled in the most tranquil of settings.
