Location of Tuscany
|
|
The region stretches over the slopes of the Apennines, in front of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Tuscan
landscape, the zone of Apennines is mainly mountainous and hilly, with a flat area beside the sea
(the Maremma). The coastline presents different aspects, offering both long sandy expanses and headlands.
In front of the coast there are the small enchanting islands of the Tuscan archipelago - Elba, Gorgona,
Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio, Giannutri. The greatest valleys of the region are Lunigiana,
Garfagnana, Mugello, Casentino, Val Tiberina, the main river is Arno and two lakes are Massaciuccoli
and Chiusi. Tuscany borders on Liguria (north-west), Emilia-Romagna (north), Marche and Umbria (east),
Latium (south).

Climate in Tuscany
|
|
In general the climate in Tuscany is very mild. There are little differences between the regions, though.
Rule of thumb: at the coast and in the valleys the summers are hotter than in the hilly areas, where the
climate is very continental - rain falls are more often. Usually the summers in Tuscany are without rain
and very hot, especially in the valleys. Spring (April and May) and autumn (October and November) might
be rainy but there are still dry, sunny days. In the winter there are sunny, mild days but at night it
sometimes gets very cold. July ist he hottest month with temperatures from 23°C up to 30°C (74-86°F). Especially
in the valleys the temperatures sometimes rise up high. In the coldest month - January- there are about
7°C (45°F) at the coast and about 3,5-5,5°C (38-42°F) inside the country. Of course the temperature in the
mountainious areas is below.

Best Time to Travel to Tuscany
|
|
The best time to visit Tuscany is in the low season, from April to June and in September, October,
when the weather is usually good, prices are lower and there are fewer tourists - if you come in July
or August, expect a Renaissance Disneyland experience and plenty of sweat in your socks. Early winter,
in December, can also be surprisingly pleasant, with crisp air and sunny days and far, far fewer
people clogging up the piazzas.

Attractions in Tuscany
|
There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start. Certainly most should
start with Florence, then continue on to Siena and Pisa. Cities of art like Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and
Lucca are all striking. Tuscany is unrivaled as a cradle of all-time art. One can find examples of every
age and style: from the Etruscan civilization (Fiesole, Chiusi, Volterra, Populonia) to Roman monuments
and ruins; from the Romanesque architecture to the impressive Gothic cathedrals, to the exceptional
artistic explosion of the Renaissance. In addition to art, Tuscany offers outstanding nature sceneries,
such as the National Park of the Argentario and the Isola of Elba. In Siena there is the beautiful
Piazza del Campo. In Florence there are the fifteenth-century shops on the Ponte Vecchio. Pisa has
the Campo dei Miracoli, with the famous Leaning Tower.
There are many events all year round throughout Tuscany, but many are concentrated during the summer.
Many festivals as well as sagre, food festivals, start in early summer and continue on through
the fall as local specialties (truffles, wine, olive oil) come into season. If you are coming to Tuscany
during other periods of the year, don't worry as there is always something to see or do then as well.
Rome, Florence and Milan are known for good buys in quality leather goods, silk scarves and ties, and
fashion, especially knitwear. In Florence, Siena and throughout Tuscany, you can find ceramics and
straw goods. In addition, Florence and Venice offer gold jewelry and embroidered linens. Venice’s
glass is famous; authentic Venetian lace is an expensive rarity.

Society in Tuscany
|
|
Nowdays 2/5 of the Tuscanian population lives in communes with more than 20 000 inhabitants.
Among the provinces the most densely populated is the province of Florence which contains 1/3 of the
entire regional population. The most depopulated provinces are Arezzo, Siena and Grosseto where agricultural
activity was abandoned in its big part and new industrial infrastructure not created yet.
Last 30-40 years brought to this region more changes than in any other part of Italy: intensive
urbanization of the territory, concentration of the working population in industrial, touristic
and commercial spheres of activity which meant reduce of agricultural sector. Tuscany is on the
second place among the central regions by the product per inhabitant. Here people spend a lot for
their primary needs; women and men live more than an average Italian citizen. The rate of expenses
for sport and recreation is one of the highest in Italy. Tuscanians read a lot of newspapers and
magazines which shows high level of education and developed spirit of participation in social life.
The number of reported crimes is much lower than shows an average Italian statistics.

Food in Tuscany
|
Tuscany is the heartland of Italy with its foods reflecting the very best of Italy’s home cooking,
it’s roots originating from cucina povera, or peasant cookery. The Tuscans are well known for their
superior yet simple dishes, which arise from using the freshest available products. They believe in
enhancing the purity and natural flavor of ingredients, rather than trying to camouflage with excess
sauces and seasonings. Vast selection of seafood can be found along the coast, giving way to the
invention of a famous seafood soup called Cacciucco whose ingredients may vary from day to day depending
on the daily catch. Almost everywhere in Tuscany, meat is grilled over open fires, but one of the most
well known grilled dishes must be Bistecca Fiorentina. This is a perfectly cooked T-bone steak,
which is often served with a splash of olive oil, or thinly sliced and topped with peppery arugula
lettuce as in my recipe for Tagliata con Rucola recipe. Wild game such as pheasant, rabbit, partridge
and wild boar are plentiful across the Tuscan hills and have been hunted to supplement the meals of
farmers for centuries.
Vegetables grow freely across the region, and the people have perfected methods necessary to bring
forth their full flavor. Many vegetables are eaten raw, steamed and drizzled with olive oil and a
little garlic, or cooked in a method called saltare. This method simply consists of gently steaming
the vegetables, draining them, and then sauteing them briefly in olive oil, chile pepper and garlic.
Artichokes, asparagus, spinach, fennel, broad beans and cannellini beans grow freely in kitchen
gardens everywhere. Tuscans are named the bean-eaters of Italy, as they are renowned for their
love of beans. One particular favorite are early fava beans eaten raw or lightly steamed as in
my Fave con Pecorino recipe. The other favorite are dried white cannellini or toscanelli beans.
The traditional method of cooking toscanelli is in a flask with olive oil and garlic and cooked
over a dying fire overnight until they reach a creamy consistency.
