Information about the Holiday Apartment in Cortona, Arezzo
Holiday in Centoia, Arezzo, Tuscany: La Lombarda is ideally placed for visiting the major centres of art, history and culture in Tuscany and Umbria as well as the many places of outstanding natural beauty in these two areas. Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto are all easily accessible via the superstrada and motorway system. There is an efficient and cheap train service from our two local stations to the centres of Arezzo, Florence and Rome. Visit the interesting and picturesque hilltop towns of Cortona, Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, Paciano and Panicale using the local roads that provide ample opportunities for enjoying the Tuscan and Umbrian countryside. Monte Amiata features skiing and snow boarding but it is about an hours drive away and a bit more when the approach roads are icy. There is a water-slide park under Cortona.
Things to do: If you enjoy walking & feel that its time to get away from it all take to the hills behind Cortona & Lake Trasimeno & walk in Hannibal’s footsteps. Not so energetic then just simply relax at La Lombarda with a drink & maybe a good book either by the pool or on your own terrace. Tuscany is without doubt the most important wine producing area in Italy whilst the Umbrian producers have made great strides to compete in terms of quality & variety. Follow a planned ‘Wine Route’ & visit some of the famous vineyards. Avignonesi is just five minutes from La Lombarda. Cortona, in the Val di Chiana, continues to preserve considerable Etruscan traces in the form of an Archaeological Park, Museum & excavated sites. The Archdiocese Museum contains paintings by Luca Signorelli, Beato Angelico & others, but the masterpiece is Beato Angelico’s painting of ‘The Annunciation’. In the summer months Cortona hosts various cultural events including concerts, operas & recitals as well as local festivals.
Lake Trasimeno: Lake Trasimeno, Italy’s third largest lake, in Umbria is a 15 minute drive away. Hannibal defeated the Romans here in 217 BC. Visit Passignano and Castiglione del Lago and then maybe take a boat ride to one of the lakes islands. Paciano, just to the south, was voted one of the eight most beautiful villages in Italy and after wandering its quiet streets a lunch at ‘La Loggetta’ is recommended. Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis, attracts large numbers of visitors year-round. The Basilica di San Francesco houses the Saint’s tomb and frescoes by Giotto and Lorenzetti. Travel a little further on and visit the pretty hill top towns of Spello, Bevagna, Montefalco and even Spoleto. Nearby Deruta is rightfully famous for its uniquely designed ceramics While the ladies meander round one of the local markets perhaps the men fancy a round of golf. Val di Chiana & Perugia Golf courses are respectively 30 minutes and 1-hour drive by car.
