There are monuments from the Mycenean, Geometric, Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods, as well as from the Middle Ages, the Turkish occupation, and the Italian invasion. The foray of cultures never succeeded in corrupting the Greek nature of the island, however. Rather, the various examples of each are harmoniously blended throughout the modern city of Kos.
Among the sights, what stands out is the Asklepeion, in a magnificent location just outside the city, the Plane Tree of Hippocrates, under the shade of which taught the great teacher of medicine, according to tradition, the ancient Agora, theatre, and the gymnasium “Ksisto”, the Casa Romana, the Castle of St. John, with its familiar bridge and tall palm trees for background, and from more contemporary times, the Provincial Government Building, the museum and City Hall. There is also the renovated Aktaion, a remnant of the Italian period, which today is home to the Tourist Information office of the City Tourist Organization. On the way to the Asklepeion one may also visit the International Hippocratic Institute in which the Hippocratic Museum displays valuable coins, busts and rare editions of Hippocrates’ work as well as neo-Hippocratic contributions to science.
Naturally, a stroll in the old town will always have something of interest since a wide variety of shopkeepers are gathered there offering large selections of offering large selections of merchandise.
