Location of Germany

Since the reunification in 1989 Germany is once more one of the biggest countries in Europe with its capital Berlin. Obviously, it contains many geographical features as varied as the shore of the Baltic and North sea and the ecosystem of the Alps. Germany shares borders with Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland.

Climate in Germany

The greater part of Germany lies in the cool/temperate climatic zone in which humid westerly winds predominate. The climate is affected among other things by the Gulf Stream, which promotes an unusually mild climate. In the north-west and the north the climate is oceanic and rain falls all year round. Winters there are relatively mild and summers tend to be comparatively cool, even though temperatures can reach above 28°C (82°F) for prolonged periods of time. Average temperatures in January 0°C (30°F) in July 19°C (67°F). In the east the climate shows clear continental features; winters can be very cold for long periods, and summers can become very warm. Here, too, long dry periods are often recorded.

Best Time to Travel to Germany

Germany is a fine destination year-round, but most people visit between May and September when sunny skies are most likely and much of life moves outdoors. Beer gardens and cafes bustle at all hours; outdoor events and festivals enliven cities and villages; and hiking, cycling and swimming are popular pursuits - at least as long as the weather plays along. Remember that rain is a possibility in any month. The flipside of summer travel is, of course, larger crowds at museums and other attractions. Accommodation needn't be hard to come by unless you're drawn to beach and mountain resorts popular with German holiday-makers. The shoulder seasons (from March to May and from October to early November) bring fewer tourists and often surprisingly pleasant weather. In April and May, when flowers and fruit trees are in bloom, it can be mild and sunny. Indian summers that stretch well into autumn are not uncommon. With the exception of winter sports, activities between November and early March are likely to focus more on culture and city life. In these months, skies tend to be gloomy and the mercury often drops below freezing. On the plus side, there are fewer visitors and shorter queues (except in the winter resorts). Just pack the right clothes and keep in mind that there are only six to eight hours of daylight. In December the sun (if there is any) sets around 15:30.

Attractions in Germany

Germany's landscape is straight from the Brothers Grimm: castles in the air, deep dark forests, fabled rivers. Its capital Berlin has history that encroaches achingly on the present and a culture so now it's almost tomorrow, and its other major cities are havens of fine art and fine living. The Winter Carnival - Fasching Season occurs throughout Germany, with big cities such as Cologne (Köln), Munich and Mainz erupting into commotion just before Ash Wednesday. The Jazz Festivals in Stuttgart (April) and Berlin (November) are lively and popular. Germany's rich musical heritage is showcased in a plethora of festivals. Some towns concentrate on a particular composer, such as the Thuringian Bach Festival in March or the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth each July, whereas others focus on a particular style. Autumn is a great time for harvest-inspired mayhem, especially in the Rhineland, where the Rhine in Flames frolics feature barges laden with fireworks. Mention must be made of Oktoberfest, Munich's annual lager frenzy, but it's a bit like being stuck in a nightmarish soccer crowd and is more an example of tourism at its lowest ebb than a display of German culture. Christmas Fairs are embraced wholeheartedly by German families; they occur in Munich, Nuremberg, Lübeck, Berlin, Münster and Heidelberg, amongst other places. It is very common practice to take a mid-afternoon stroll on Sunday; town and city centres at this time are often very animated places, in stark comparison with Saturday afternoons when, owing to the early closing of shops, town centres can seem almost deserted.
Events: January - Berlin: International Green Week, Six-day Race (bicycle-race). March - Berlin: International Tourism Trade Fair (ITB), April - Bavaria Easter Festival. April/May - Cologne-Music Triennial. May - Chiemnitz-German Mozart Festival, June - Mainz-Midsummer’s Eve Celebrations. July - Berlin: Love Parade, German Choir Festival. August - Berlin Young Euro Classic (European Music Summer). August/September - Public Wine Festival. September - Real Berlin Marathon. September/October - Munich: Oktoberfest. November/December - Christmas Markets, nationwide; Winterdom (large funfair, including circus), Hamburg. December 31 New Year’s Eve Party at the Brandenburger Tor, Berlin.

Society in Germany

Germans love to be polite! Handshaking is customary. Normal courtesies should be observed and it is common to be offered food and refreshments when visiting someone’s home. It is customary to present the hostess with unwrapped flowers (according to tradition, one should always give an uneven number and it is worth noting that red roses are exclusively a lover’s gift). Courtesy dictates that when entering a shop, restaurant or similar venue, visitors should utter a greeting such as Guten Tag (or Grüss Gott in Bavaria) before saying what it is that they want; to leave without saying Auf Wiedersehen can also cause offence. Similarly, when making a telephone call, asking for the person you want to speak to without stating first who you are is considered rude. Formal dress is required for some restaurants, the opera, theatre, casinos and important social functions. Evening wear is worn when requested. Smoking is prohibited where notified and on public transport and in some public buildings.
Tipping: At restaurants, the service charge is always included in bills and tipping isn't compulsory, though it is appreciated. Germans are used to rounding up prices as tips, but rounding up in euros can be too generous. It is customary to tip taxi drivers, hairdressers, cloakroom attendants and in bars.

Food in Germany

Thinking of German cuisine as of a mix of Beer & Sausage would be an unforgivable simplification of this very fine cultural tradition. Germans appreciate healthy, well-prepared foods served with care. Everyone who loves to have a good substantial meal will be impressed by German way of cooking. There are hundreds of different dishes and beverages many of which are typical only to some German regions. And sure, you are not likely to find them in any other country than Germany. These reasons make it worth to get acquainted with specific German foods, and first of all ... in order to taste them! A set menu meal in a simple restaurant Gasthof or cafe usually includes three courses: soup is the most popular starter. The main meal consists of vegetables or a salad, potatoes, meat and gravy. For pudding, there is often a sweet such as a blancmange, fruit or ice cream. Restaurants often serve either beer or wine. Breakfast served in homes and hotels usually consists of a boiled egg, bread rolls with jam, honey, cold cuts and cheese slices. Available from snack bars, butcher shops, bakers and cafes are grilled, fried or boiled sausages Wurst with a crusty bread roll or potato salad. There are also bread rolls filled with all kinds of sausage slices, hot meat filling such as Leberkäse, pickled herring, gherkins and onion rings or cheese. In bakeries, Strudel with the traditional apple filling, a variety of fruits and fromage frais is available. There is also an astonishingly wide variety of breads. International speciality restaurants can be found everywhere in the western part of the country. Do not forget to try the famous German wines and beers!

Visa for Germany

EU citizens can enter on an official identity card. Americans, Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders and Japanese just need a valid passport (no visa). Unless you're a citizen of a developing country, you can probably stay up to three months.
