Location of the Cote d'Azur - French Riviera
|
|
The Cote d'Azur is one of the most famous resort areas in the world, the French Riviera continues
west from the Italian Riviera and Menton through Monaco, Nice, Antibes and Cannes along the
Mediterranean coast of the Alpes-Maritimes département. The French Riviera is regarded as one of
the most luxurious, expensive, and sophisticated areas on the planet and is home to the world's rich
and famous. Cannes is host to the annual presentation of the Palme d'or which attracts movie stars
from around the world. Major places of interest along the coast include - St Tropez, St Raphael,
Frejus, Cannes, Antibes / Juan les Pins, Nice, Villefranche sur Mer, Beaulieu, Monaco / Monte Carlo,
Sophia Antipolis & Menton. Inland places of interest include Hyeres, Grasse, Biot, Valbonne &
Vence plus many more small towns and villages. |
Climate of the Cote d'Azur - French Riviera
|
|
The French Riviera usually enjoys around 300 sunny days per year, the hottest months being June,
July and August. The sun is immensely strong so be prepared with plenty of high protection sunblock
as a bad dose of sunburn or sunstroke can ruin your trip not to mention your health permanently.
During September, October and November the weather gets milder, but still remains very pleasant
and winter starts around December through to Febuary although temperatures only get down to
about 7°C (45°F). March and April sees spring arrive (very pleasant) and May sees the beginning
of summer. Local skiing is best between December & March, nearest slopes are about a 1 hour drive
from the coast. |
Best Time to Travel to the Cote d'Azur - French Riviera
|
|
Avoid July and August when planning your trip. Not only is the weather a little too hot for comfort,
but the whole of Europe seems to descend on the Riviera in those months sending prices rocketing.
Insiders visit the French Riviera in May and June or September and October. At that time the wall to wall
crowds are still or already absent, the weather is balmy, and you don't need to queue up for restaurants. |
Attractions in the Cote d'Azur - French Riviera
|
Capital of the Lemon (Citrus Festival held every year in February), Menton is blessed by
a particularly mild and sunny climate. West of Menton, the ancient village of Roque-brune looks
down at the shoreline, giving a superb view of the Principality of Monaco. Visit the many tropical
gardens in and around Menton, and the Cocteau Museum. Looked upon as a temple of luxury and
prestige, Monaco is a world set slightly apart from the rest of the Cote d'Azur. Because of
its economic boom, many sky-scrapers have appeared in the last decades, the only ones you'll see on
the Riviera. The new neighbourhood of Fontvieille, partly reclaimed from the sea, plays host to
many business premises and a yacht harbor. Don’t miss the Prince's Palace and the Old Town
on the Rock of Monaco (breathtaking views from both sides of the Palace Square), the Casino and Casino
Gardens, the Museum of Oceanography, the Exotic Gardens.
While Nice and its famous Promenade des Anglais bordering the Bay of Angels is well-known
to visitors from all the world, the capital of the Cote d'Azur offers many other attractions, often
less familiar, yet full of warmth and charm. The picturesque Old Town with its lively streets and
Provencal market is set between the Port on one side and the "Baie des Anges" (Bay of Angels) on the other.
Brimming with color, the Old Town has a very Italian atmosphere.
Between Nice and Antibes, the Cote d'Azur reveals itself in a less familiar light: blend of yesteryear
charm and modernity. Saint Laurent du Var, Cagnes-sur-Mer and Villeneuve-Loubet, have all
undergone recent development around their old town centers protected by ramparts. Don't miss: the
Flots Bleus stroll in Saint Laurent du Var, the castle in the old town of Les Hauts-de-Cagnes,
and the medieval castle at Villeneuve-Loubet.
Antibes, the French Riviera's second largest town, spreads outwards from its original town fortified
with ramparts. Walk along the ramparts for a constantly changing view of Cap d'Antibes, and a browse
around the Provencal market. The Picasso Museum is a must for its rich collection of paintings
and sculptures. At Juan-les-Pins: a walk along the Promenade du Soleil, Port Gallice and Port Crouton,
and the Eden Beach Casino.
Nestling in the hills beyond Cannes, Grasse is the only large town on the Cote d'Azur not at
the edge of the Mediterranean. But Grasse is also unique for other reasons. Capital of the Perfume
Industry, it is a town of fragrance whose steep streets are well worth discovering. The historic part
of town with its quaintness and charm is also well worth the detour. Visit the Casino and Congress
Center, the Perfumery Museum and Villa Fragonard.
The National Mercantour Park one of France's seven national nature reserves, the Mercantour Park
lies north-east of the Cote d'Azur. Extending across seven valleys, it covers over 171,250 acres of
mountain land. Its rich flora is composed of more than 2,000 species, some of which you won't find elsewhere.
Many fantastic hikes and walks are to be discovered in this lovely setting, over-looked from a height of
3,000 metres by Mount Gélas. |
Events in the Cote d'Azur - French Riviera
|
|
3,900 events each year! That's what happens on the Cote d'Azur. Every day is a celebration and the
year is punctuated by these various and diverse events that leave their stamps on the life of every
town and village, from the coast to the depths of the hinterland. How is it possible to choose from
so many top-quality events? |
Food in the Cote d'Azur - French Riviera
|
An endless choice of eateries awaits the French Riviera visitor. Just about any dish is available always
prepared to high standards. Local specialities include Gigot de Mouton (leg of lamb with provencal herbs),
Daube (braised beef with spices & red wine), Soupe de Poisson (a delicious all liquid fish
soup served with croutons and the spicy maionaisse 'rouille' the choice really is enormous so perhaps the
best advice is to go and experiment - you will not be disappointed.
Excellent local wines (whites, rosés and reds) are available cheaply just about everywhere, some nice ones
to try out include Châteneuf du Pape (red), the white Muscat from Beaune de Venise & any
of the Cotes de Provence rosés. The Cote d'Azur is also the home of the famous Pastis an
anise flavoured aperitif usually taken before meals. A good proportion of social activity takes place in
the scores of cafés and bars found in every town & village in France. The cafés often have a light menu and
are excellent places just to sit & relax with a coffee or a cold beer. |
Society in the Cote d'Azur - French Riviera
|
|
12% of the population of the Cote d'Azur is from outside France: Britons, Germans, Italians, Americans,
Canadians, Scandinavians are among the 160 nationalities represented. It is a culturally active population,
which has created a true multi-cultural land. The French Riviera is the fifth largest urban area in
France, a metropolis which has grown gradually over more than 2 centuries, with a respect for its
outstanding natural assets and an undisputed quality of life. From the Alps to the shores of the
Mediterranean, the Cote d'Azur - French Riviera possesses unbelievably diverse and extraordinarily
beautiful landscapes, and a lifestyle that is viewed as highly attractive. |
