Holiday in Jarnac, Charente: Jarnac is a truly special town, an oasis of sophistication (owing to centuries of cognac money and the affluence of its merchants) in an important agricultural region still producing one of the world's oldest brands. The cognac influence makes Jarnac feel like a tourist town, ie clean picturesque, safe, but without the inundation of tourists. There are two Michelin starred restaurants and a wonderful (and daily) covered market within walking distance, as well as a boulangerie and some more down to earth restaurants. As one would imagine the biking is excellent whether along the river or into the vineyards and there are a number of water sports almost just out the front door (e.g. boat and kayak rentals). There is obviously a focus on cognac, with the Courvoisier headquarters and museum a centrepiece of the town, but the perhaps the best tour (owing to limitless tastings!) is at Louis Royer just down the street. We are also only an hour's drive from the wonderful beaches of Royan, etc.
