Location of the Czech Republic
|
|
Adjoining Austria, Germany, Poland and the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic consists of Bohemia
in the west and Moravia in the east. Within Moravia is a small southern part of the historical region
called Silesia, the rest of which is in present-day Poland. Prague, the capital of both the Czech
Republic and Bohemia, sits astride the Vltava River about 30 km (19 mi) above its junction with the
Labe River.

Climate in the Czech Republic
|
|
The weather of the Czech Republic is quite unsettled, with generally cold winters and mild summers. Spring and summer
have the highest rainfall.

Best Time to Travel to the Czech Republic
|
|
May, June and September are the prime visiting months, with April and October as chillier
and sometimes cheaper alternatives. In July and August hostels are chock-a-block with students,
especially in Prague. Outside of Prague and other major regional centres, from October until
April, most castles and museums close down.

Attractions in the Czech Republic
|
The Czech Republic is hilly and picturesque, with historic castles, romantic valleys and lakes, as
well as excellent facilities to ‘take the waters’ at one of the famous spas or to ski and hike in
the mountains. Among the most beautiful areas are the river valleys of the Vltava (Moldau) and Labe
(Elbe), the hilly landscape and rocky mountains. Bohemia, to the west, is one of two main regions.
Besides Prague, the Czech capital, tourists are drawn to the spa towns of Karlovy Vary
and Marianske Lazne, and to the very beautiful region of south Bohemia. The Elbe flows through eastern
Bohemia from the Krkonocse/Giant mountains, one of the most popular skiing regions. The eastern part,
the rich agricultural area of Moravia offers a variety of wooded highlands, vineyards, folk art and
castles.
The Czech Republic is still all things to all people. From the pulsing capital Prague to the back-in-time
villages of Moravia, from toiling up mountains to lounging in spas, from the world-famous Pilsner to
the strains of Smetana and Dvorak, there's an experience to suit every taste. Stunning architecture
is not limited to Prague - there are plenty of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque facades in other towns.
Among the richest are Kutna Hora in Central Bohemia; Cheb, Loket and Domazlice in western Bohemia;
Olomouc in northern Moravia; and Tela and Kromeriz in southern Moravia. Cyclists will appreciate the
undulating Bohemian plateau, drained by the Vltava, the republic's longest river, and its parent river,
the Labe, and dotted with castles and modest villages. A natural pathway through Moravia is the Moravian Gate,
the linked valleys of the Morava, Beava and Odra rivers, the only lowland corridor across the Czech Republic.
Though this is the most densely populated part of the republic, the hills to both sides offer some of
its most peaceful travelling.
Practically every day is a saint's day in the Czech Republic, and special days, festivals and public
holidays are widely acknowledged. On 30 April in Prague, the Czech version of Walpurgisnacht, Paleni
Carodejnic (Burning of the Witches) is a pre-Christian festival for warding off evil. Politically
incorrect witch burning is now replaced by all-night bonfire parties on Kampa Island and in suburban
backyards. High culture follows for the remainder of the year with the Prazske Jaro (Prague Spring)
International Music Festival in May and June, the Prague International Book Fair also in May and the
Mozart Festival in September. The Christmas and New Year season closes the year quietly for most
of the Czech Republic, but Prague is overcome with tourist revelry during a fast and furious holiday season.

Society in the Czech Republic
|
|
Theatre and opera are on a good standard all over Eastern Europe. Much of the nightlife takes place
in nightclubs, bars and casinos which are to be found in major cities. The Czech nation is one of the
most musical in Central Europe. Throughout the year there are many occasions to enjoy music in concert
halls, theatres, stately homes and churches. Regular music festivals and concert cycles also take place.
Most towns have their own folk festivals, with dancing, local costumes and food. Dress should be casual,
but conservative, except at formal dinners and at quality hotels or restaurants.
|
Food of the Czech Republic
|
Food in the Czech Republic is often based on Austro-Hungarian dishes; (Wiener) Schnitzel and pork are
very popular. Specialities include bramborak, a delicacy of a potato pancake filled with
garlic and herbs and Prague ham. Meat dishes are mostly served with knedliky, a type
of large dough dumpling, and zeli (sauerkraut). Western-style fresh vegetables are often missing
in lower-class restaurants. There is a wide selection of restaurants, beer taverns and wine cellars.
Popular beverages include beers (lager, dark ales, pilsner), red, white and sparkling wines from Bohemia
and Moravia, fruit juices and liqueurs. Particular specialities include becherovka (herb brandy)
and two Moravian favourites, slivovice (plum brandy) and merunkovice (apricot brandy).
