Location of Austria

Austria is a landlocked country in central Europe. It borders Germany and the Czech Republic to the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, Slovenia and Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. Its capital is the city of Vienna.

Climate in Austria

The greater part of Austria lies in the cool/temperate climate zone in which humid westerly winds predominate. With over half of the country dominated by the Alps the alpine climate is the predominant one. In the East the climate shows continental features with less rain than the areas with high rainfall averages.

Best Time to Travel to Austria

Summer sightseeing and winter sports make Austria a year-round destination. In the summer high season (July to August) crowds are bigger and prices higher. Winter sports are in full swing from mid-December to late March. Spring in the Alps is in June, when the Alpine flowers start coating the mountains with colour.

Attractions in Austria

The music festivals are becoming more popular. In January, New Year concerts comprise extravagant balls in Vienna. February brings Fasching (Carnival) which celebrates the return of spring with street shows and dances. Corpus Christi (the second Thursday after Whitsun) is celebrated with more carnivals, some organized on lakes in the Salzkammergut. The Vienna International Festival (from mid-May to mid-June) has a rich programme of arts and is considered the best part of the year. The Salzburg International Festival is held in late-July & August and includes a lot of music by the city's favourite son, Mozart. Midsummer Night's celebrations on 21 June light up the sky with magnificent bonfires. National Day on 26 October includes plenty of patriotic flag-waving. St Nicholas Day, on 6 December, denotes the beginning of the Christmas season.

Society in Austria

Austrians tend to be quite formal in both their social and business dealings. They don't say first names when being introduced, but after the initial meeting first names are quite often used. Handshaking is common when saying hello and goodbye. It is regarded impolite to enter a restaurant or shop without saying 'Guten Tag' or 'Grüss Gott'; similarly, to leave without saying 'Auf Wiedersehen' can trigger offence. If invited to dinner, flowers should be brought for the hostess. The Church enjoys a respected position in the Austrian society, which should be kept in mind by the traveller. It is expected to dress up for the opera or the theatre.
Tipping: Widespread. On restaurant bills a service fee of 10-15% is included, but it is normal to leave an additional 5%. Attendants at theatres or gas stations, taxi drivers expect to be tipped. Railway or airports have fixed fees for portering.

Food in Austria

Soups are a savory and inexpensive choice. Most popular are Gulyassuppe (a Hungarian goulash soup) and Leberknödlsuppe (meat broth with round dumplings containing chicken liver). Goulashes - stews of beef or pork spiced with paprika - are prepared many different ways. The local version, Wiener Gulasch, is usually lighter on the paprika than most Hungarian versions.
Austrian bread, especially that baked in Viennese ovens, is among the best in the world. It comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and is made with many different grains and flours. Strudels too, come in great variety, the most popular being Apfelstrudel. Also wonderful is poppy-seed yeast strudel. It's no secret that Austrians are meat-eaters or that a famous dish is Wiener schnitzel (breaded veal cutlet). The most authentic recipes insist that the schnitzel be fried in lard, whereas others prefer butter or at least a combination of the two. But everyone agrees on one point: The schnitzel should have the golden-brown color of a Stradivarius violin.
Another renowned meat specialty is boiled beef, or Tafelspitz. Every Austrian has at least tried this celebrated dish, a favorite of emperor Franz Joseph. For the best, try it at Hotel Sacher, but if the price is too high, order Tafelspitz at a much cheaper Beisel, cousin of the French bistro.
Roast goose is prepared for festive occasions such as Christmas, but you don't need to wait until Christmas to order eine gute Fettgans, a nice fat goose. Austrians also enjoy fresh fish from the lakes and rivers. Our favorite is the salmon trout of the Salzkammergut lake district. After such a plentiful dinner, you can just sit and meditate over some strong coffee, and some schnapps.
If you prefer lighter or more fat-free foods, or you're a vegetarian, don't immediately cancel a trip to Austria. In keeping with the trends of western Europe and America, Austrian chefs - many of whom have trained abroad - now prepare a lighter, more sophisticated cuisine. The fat content has been reduced in many traditional dishes, and vegetarian cuisine is becoming more popular throughout the country. Look especially for Spatzle, a potato-based noodle dish, or Steinpilze, gigantic mushrooms native to the area. If you don't eat meat, almost any dish with "Vegi" in it is safe to eat, but check first with your server.
Austrians are exceedingly fond of desserts, and all over the country you'll have the chance to sample Salzburger Nockerl, a taste-tempting frothy soufflé. Viennese pastries and cakes are world-famous, including Rehruken, a chocolate "saddle of venison" cake that's studded with almonds.
Even if you're not addicted to eating sweets, there's a gustatory experience you must not miss in Vienna: a Sacher Torte.

Visa for Austria

EU, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand citizens do not require visas for stays of up to three months. Nationals of African and Arabic countries generally require a visa, also valid for up to three months.
