Information about the Villa in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic
Holiday in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: The Dominican Republic is a beach lover's dream. Miles of pristine white sand can be found in just about every nook and cranny of this magnificent island. Popularity is subjective, of course, but the area around Puerto Plata, along the northern shore, is famous for strings of seemingly unending tufts of sand. Some favorites include Playa Dorada (Golden Beach), known also for the myriad of water sports activities, Guarapito, a crescent shaped beach with thick shade serving as a backdrop, Long Beach, a mile-long city beach east of downtown and a favorite among locals, and Cofresi Beach, a small, palm-covered beach that offers a panoramic vista of Puerto Playa. For those who are looking for some active sunshine fun, the two-mile beach in Cabarete, protected by coral reefs, is considered to be one of the best and safest in the world for windsurfing. The area on the southeastern tip of DR offers more gorgeous beaches.
Fishing, diving: Boca Chica Beach, just 15 minutes from Santo Domingo, is one of the country's jewels, with a large marina and yacht club. The beach is unique in that its greatest depth is a mere four feet, for which it is reputed to be the Caribbean's largest natural swimming pool, an ideal choice for the entire family. Between mid-December and March, gigantic humpback whales migrate south to the warmer waters around the Dominican Republic. Whale watching is a favorite pastime off the coast of Puerto Plata at the Silver Bank Humpback Whale Sanctuary (Santuario de Ballenas Jorobadas del Banco de la Plata). The preserve was started in 1986 to help keep fishing parties from hunting the majestic mammals. Excursions can also be found leaving from Samana Bay. Sportfishing is huge in the DR. Anglers have caught award winning marlin, sailfish, dorado, bonito, tarpon, and snook. Charters leave from Puerto Plata, La Romana, and Boca de Yuma, east of Santo Domingo.
Golf courses: With more than 20 courses, the Dominican Republic is fast gaining the reputation as a golfer's heaven. On the northern coast, Playa Grande was designed by Robert Trent Jones, and is rated as one of the best in the world. Down south in La Romana, Teeth of the Dog, designed by Pete Dye, waits precariously perched looking out over the ocean, to snag any wayward drives. On the eastern shore, Punta Cana Resort Golf offers a challenge for all skill levels, and provides incredible views of the white Punta Cana beaches.
