History: As a tribute to my mother, who has played an incredibly important role in my life, I decided to name Petworth Place after the home in which her family originated. Sometime in the late 1700's a baby boy was born to a Miss Upperton, a chambermaid in the household of George Wyndham, whose title was Lord Leconsfield, 3rd Earl of Egremont. The baby was the illegitimate son of the Earl. He was christened George Upperton and was my great-great grandfather.
The boy was never acknowledged as the son of the Earl, but he grew up in his father's household at Petworth House in Sussex, England.
Petworth House was the family's primary residence and was served by an army of staff. In the 1890's apart from the 50 odd members of staff in the house, there were 24 men employed in the stables, 25 gardeners and many more working on the estate. The estate had its own cricket team coached by a professional cricketer and even had its own private fire brigade.
