Bushmen (or, more correctly, San) once roamed these hills and valleys and their rock art and artifacts are to be found in various locations on Schanskraal.
Many animal species are at home on Schanskraal; in particular Leopard, Jackal, Aardwolf, Aardvark, Zebra, Kudu, Black Wildebeest, Gemsbok, Springbok, Blesbok, Steenbok, Klipspringer, Caracal (Rooikat), Baboons, Meerkats etc. Over 150 different bird species have been observed including Black Eagles, Martial Eagles and Fish Eagles.
