Information about the Castle in Somerset, England
History of the castle in Somerset: The site is recorded in The domesday book as belonging to Gunni the Dane. The current construction was started around 1620 for a Lord Poulett a local wealthy Land owner. Unfortunately at around this time the English civil war began which led to lord Poulett having to support the royalist cause. This meant going into battle with the king against the puritan Oliver Cromwell. Poulett was taken prisoner at the Battle of Exeter in Devon. With Oliver Cromwell and his army successfully defeating the royalist army of king Charles Lord Poulett was released but had to forfeit his lands, Walton castle then was left virtually empty for the next 300 years.
In 1980 the restoration was began and has taken the best part of 20 years to return it to it' former glory. A truly spectacular historical building which is now a beautiful country home. Many photographs dating back to the mid 1800's can be found at the Francis frith web site, Victorian founder of the world famous photographic archive.
