Information about the Room in Menorca, Balearic Islands
Holiday in Menorca: Renamed as the capital of Menorca in the early 1700's by the British, Mahon still retains a "colonial feel", which is evident in the Georgian architecture not seen The capital Mao (Mahon) is at the eastern end of the island. Ferries from the Spanish mainland and Palma de Mallorca arrive regularly at the Port of Mahon, one of Menorca's four natural harbours. The main road runs through the middle of the island leading to Ciutadella (Menorca's second largest town), with secondary roads leading off to the North and South to various resorts and beaches. Menorca itself is only 53km wide, so hiring a car and exploring the island is a must! Temperatures in Menorca usually rise to around 30 degrees in July and August and fall to 14 degrees in January. Menorca has an average of 315 days of sunshine a year. Flight times from the UK are approximately 2.5 hours.
Beaches: Son Bou has the longest beach in Menorca - nearly 3km of pale golden sand, making it ideal for sun worshippers and watersport enthusiasts. The sandy beach shelves gently into the sea, which is generally safe for swimming. Ocean currents, however, can be strong at times and you should look out for the red and green flags.
Food & Drink: Fornells, an ancient fishing village set in a natural harbour, has been made famous for its seafood restaurants, featuring the local speciality of 'caldereta de llangosta' (lobster stew). It's reported that King Juan Carlos of Spain visits every year to sample this culinary delight. Elsewhere around the island you can find typical Spanish restaurants, serving tapas and other traditional Spanish meals. Menorcan island cooking relies heavily on seafood and it is common to see a wide variety of fish dishes on the menu. Other tastes are catered for extremely well and most restaurants offer a wide choice of chicken, beef, pork dishes (steak, kebabs, escalopes, etc.) together with pizza and pasta choices. Most restaurants are child friendly, offering children's menus, featuring the most common favourites (nuggets, fish fingers, burgers, sausage, pizza and spaghetti bolognese). The Binibeca area offers plenty of choice for those visiting the south-eastern end of the island .
