Lagoon Albufeira: The lagoon of Albufeira is located about 30 km south of Lisbon, on the coastal area.
Recreational activities occur on the beach and seashore resorts on the seaward side of the lagoon. Most visitors to the area originate from nearby urban areas such as Lisboa and Setúbal, although international visitors are also common. Close the strong sea-waves, the calm Albufeira Lagoon has the ideal characteristics of several water sports, mainly: windsurf, sailing, canoeing and fishing.
The lagoon is very important as a traditional source of fish and shellfish to nearby areas and there is a major social event associated with the opening of the lagoon to the sea in easter week each year. Traditional agriculture occurs in small, irrigated plots around the margins of the lagoon. Surrounded by extremely beautiful geological foundations, which include other beaches, this peaceful lagoon also boasts wonderful fauna and flora. It is also integrated in the Fossil Hillside of Caparica Coast.
