Information about the Holiday House in Costa Verde, Northern Portugal

City of Braga: This city, founded by the Celts in 300 BC, became an important administrative centre during the Roman occupation (27 BC) when it was given the name of "Bracara Augusta". Since mediaeval times, it's history has been heavily influenced by the church and it is known as the city of the archbishops, since it is one of the most important episcopal seats in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church in Portugal.
Close by are the shrines of Bom Jesus do Monte and Nossa Senhora do Sameiro, important places of pilgrimage and the sites of regular religious celebrations.
All these influences are clearly visible in the city's main festivities: Holy Week is celebrated with a series of solemn processions and is one of the most important religious events in the whole of Portugal, whilst the Festas de São João Baptista (Feast of Saint John the Baptist) in June is an extremely lively and popular event, in which the whole town takes part.

National Park Peneda-Gerês: This was the first protected area to be founded in Portugal in 1971 and it is the only national park in the country. Having once been the home of the brown bear and the mountain goat, Peneda-Gerês is today one of the last refuges of the great predators, such as the wolf and the royal eagle. Peneda-Gerês is of particular note because it is the only National Park in existence in Portugal. Founded in 1971, it covers an area of 72,000 hectares and has an extraordinary diversity of climate, envirorunents and scenery, comprising the transition zone between the Mediterranean and Euro-Siberian regions. Because of this, flora and fauna are found that are rare or non existent in other parts of the country.

Guimaraes: Guimarães is an old city where tradition has been carefully preserved, as can be seen by simply taking a stroll around its narrow mediaeval streets and appreciating the many buildings in the historical centre that are decorated with statues. An application for this area to be classified as world heritage is currently being studied by UNESCO.
The mediaeval atmosphere that is distinctly felt in this city is further enhanced by the Festas Gualterianas, a festival that brings great life to its streets at the beginning of August.
