Information about the Holiday House in Douro Valley, Northern Portugal

Relax in the Douro Valley: The Douro is a valley, a river, a vineyard, it is wine. Over the river, the human influence, who transformed the slate mountains into country and walls, an epic common effort of making different cultures meet. Protected from the damp Atlantic hoists by the mountains of Marăo and Montemuro, the production area was defined as wine area for the first time in 1757 - the first viticulture regulation of the world - in the northeast of Portugal, between Barqueiros and Mazouco, near the Spanish border. This is the wine country!
The area extends today over 250.000 hectares, whereby however the vineyard takes only 40,000 hectares, deep embedded in the Douro river basin, and in its tributaries: Corgo, Torto, Pinhăo, Tua, Côa, amongst others. The entire area is divided in three sub-regions: in the west, the Baixo Corgo, in the center the Cima Corgo and in the east the Douro Superior - with different microclimatic particularities, however always with cold winters and hot and dry summers.

Oporto (Porto): Porto is a very ancient city, its original name being "Portucale", which was later to give its name to the country. The city has also lent its name to the world-famous wine produced on the banks of the River Douro and aged in the wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, the city that stands across the river on the south bank. Porto is the capital of the North and the second largest city in the country; its hard-working inhabitants are noted for their commercial enterprise, always standing firm against outside impositions and foreign invaders, which explains why Porto has become known as the "unvanquished" city.
In 2001, Porto will be the European Cultural Capital, but every year the events held in this city bring together thousands of people. Amongst the city's most important events are Fantasporto (an International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantasy Films) held in February/March and the city's popular festivities held in June in honour of St. John the Baptist.

Marco de Canavezes: Standing in one of the most fertile areas of the Douro region, Marco de Canavezes has acquired great importance as a centre of agricultural production, particularly wine and chestnuts, and all over the surrounding mountains are traces of its settlement throughout several millennia. Particularly noteworthy is the church designed by Siza Vieira (a world-famous Portuguese architect). This recent work has caused some controversy because of its unusual architectural style.
